Who told Africans that the adoption of European names will somehow take them closer to heaven, wherever that is? It is almost criminal for a black person to insist among his/her own that he/she should be called by their African names. For those in the diaspora, it is understandable because their culture was literally forced out of them through the brutality of slavery. What’s the excuse for those in Africa insisting to be called by European names?
What happens in the arena of our minds determines, to a large extent, what transpires in realm of reality. Accepting who we are is the first stage towards reclaiming our destiny. Otherwise we will always live in a world defined by Eurocentric values. In such a world, try as we may, Africans, as a people, will not thrive.
