In March of 2020, I was in Malindi when the Government announced that the first case of COVID-19 was detected in Kenya. I have just realized that since then I have not travelled out of Mombasa. Today is my first time doing so, taking a flight out to Nairobi to see my folks, whom I have not physically seen since 2019.

Everything looks different. The seating arrangements at the airport have changed to accommodate social distance. There is the sanitizer at the phone charging booths. Fewer people are having coffee at the cafeteria. The masks, don’t even go there. Yet a lot remains the same. People are absorbed in their devices. The airport is still spotlessly clean.

All in all, I am looking forward to seeing my folks. They don’t even know I am on my way to Nairobi.
