The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code governs the processes by which dangerous cargoes may be transported by sea. It was first published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1965. Since January 2004 the Code has been mandatory for SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea Convention) signatory states, effectively making it a global rulebook for the sea transport of dangerous goods.
In this regard, the publication by the name “Book it right and pack it tight” provides guidance on packing dangerous goods for carriage by sea in accordance with the IMDG Code Amendment 41-22, which is mandatory from 1 January 2024 and follows all the steps required when booking and packing a consignment of dangerous goods with a shipping line. It includes important information for supply chain stakeholders about the IMDG Code, the selection of appropriate packaging, classification of dangerous goods, and the training requirements for shore-based personnel. The content emphasizes the importance of understanding the duties and responsibilities under the IMDG Code, ensuring the security of dangerous goods, and complying with the UN packaging specification scheme. It also highlights the significance of the CTU Code, which sets recommended best practices for handling and packing cargo transport units. The document provides a comprehensive overview of the key operational processes involved in preparing and booking a consignment of dangerous goods for shipment by sea. It also outlines the importance of appropriate packaging, UN testing and approval, and the marking of packaging.
